At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed pending a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
