'Was That Not a Show?' Why a Shortened Test Deserved Its Status as a Genuine Test.

Within a glass case on the third floor of the MCG is housed a neon pink ensemble donned by Robbie Williams. His show in front of a hundred thousand attendees was considered a major hit.

You might not appreciate the performer. You might think he is the ultimate present to music the world has ever seen. Or you could adopt a reasonable stance, conceding that some songs are excellent while others are terrible.

The central idea is that entertainment can manifest in countless ways. You like what you like. There is not a single method to create literature or even the longest format.

The Peerless Spectrum of The Long Game

The five-day game boasts incomparable variety. It is hard to think of another sport where the outcome is so reliant upon the environment.

The climate, the hour of play, the red ball – the variables are numerous. Above all is the playing surface.

If the format is an artistic pursuit, the pitch is the blank slate on which the cricketers craft their legacy.

A Broken-Down Battle: The Fourth Test

The Boxing Day fixture between the two sides was the game deconstructed, the established format broken apart and reassembled in a bizarre shape.

It must be stated this is not a justification of the surface which resulted in a win and the another short match of the contest.

Allowing a thick layer on the surface, leading to 36 wickets tumbling in less than a brief period, is not a balanced duel between batter and bowler.

A Rich Tapestry: The Core of Test Cricket

But any idea this was a lesser event, one that should be marked with an asterisk as not a proper Test, is mistaken.

The long game is a diverse canvas, a long history and still growing. On occasion, as seen at the MCG, the ball behaves unpredictably for the seamers. Other times, it turns square on a dry surface. Sometimes, the pitch is dead, other times it bounces unevenly.

The exciting finishes are even more exciting because of the patience devoted elsewhere.

Adaptation: The Real Challenge

Specific conditions are accepted more easily than others.

The debate in Melbourne was that the contest was skewed excessively towards the fielding side. That the top batters were hindered from showcasing their talents.

This level of cricket is about adapting to challenges – assessing the wicket and responding accordingly. The top two individual contributions were made by world-class stars. One line-up was less disciplined than the other, and thus lost.

Sheer Celebration: The Fan Perspective

Attempt to convince the fans who have experienced a long drought that this lacked spectacle.

In one section of the stadium, thousands made noise and created an atmosphere, producing a festive mood in a bastion of Australian cricket.

There was optimism as the bowlers excelled, advantage when batters fought back, and rapturous celebration when the victory was confirmed.

Polar Opposites: The Range of Test Matches

The venue has a history with pitch problems. In the past, a match there featured a wicket with the character of a a damp squib.

That fixture was a marathon, with minimal action and interminable tedium. The two-day game and that slow Test are polar opposites of the scale – one is not more the standard, yet significance can be found in each.

Deep into the series into the current series, it is the shortest games that will live longest in the history books.

"Far from being the death of the long game at all," said a former player. "Spectators who have been fortunate to see these 48 hours have been given some genuine drama. A unique show."

Signs of Progress: Building for the Future

In the lead-in to this match, the skipper talked like a man carrying the heavy burden on his shoulders.

The team responded for him, bringing back the positive demeanor to his face.

Emerging talents delivered with crucial roles. These are incremental gains, certainly not enough to secure long-term success, but a foundation to use as a platform.

In the end, this triumph joins other memorable performances in dead rubbers.

As the supporters left into a stunning sunset, the team congregated on the field to start their own festivities.

Enjoy the drink, lads. You've earned this one.
